The inaugural Midwest Soul VegFest of 2018 faced adversity with a thunderstorm, but it triumphed with a strong turnout of vegan vendors, speakers, and attendees, even drawing coverage from Fox 4 News. Our Mayor Quentin, Lucas, and Congressman Cleaver both shared their health journey.
What's truly significant is the representation of marginalized communities, comprising over 65% of attendees, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in the vegan movement.
This event coincided with the rising popularity of veganism, reflecting a broader cultural shift towards plant-based living. Moreover, VegFest serves as a platform for advocating social justice, particularly amidst a challenging time for black communities, highlighting the interconnectedness of veganism and community support.
Gigi Jones, the founder of Midwest Soul VegFest and LR/NLR Vegfest, is a true advocate for the power of plant-based living as a form of medicine.
Her personal journey of overcoming colon cancer in 2016 through lifestyle changes and organic living foods serves as a powerful testament to this belief.
Now, Gigi is dedicated to spreading awareness about the benefits of a healthy vegan lifestyle, especially for children's wellbeing.
As the author of "The V-Code" cookbook, a certified raw food chef, health educator, dietitian, nutritionist, and owner of Gigi's Vegan and Wellness Cafe', she embodies her motto of "saving lives one plant at a time.
"Additionally, Gigi's commitment extends beyond her cafe', as she has established the nonprofit organization "KC Health Initiative" to support, educate, and provide free plant-based meals to children in urban communities and schools.
Gigi's holistic approach to health and community empowerment is truly inspiring.

By providing access to health resources and promoting clean, organic, plant-based eating, you’re not only improving individual health but also addressing broader societal issues.
The event’s lineup of entertainment, educational workshops, and plant-based food vendors, along with nationally recognized speakers, promises to be both informative and engaging for the anticipated 2000 participants. Moreover, the decision to make admission free and open to everyone ensures inclusivity and accessibility for all.
